MOVIE REVIEW OF “CHINTU KA BIRTHDAY” FROM ZEE5

It’s been 3 months, I have not moved out of my house, the un-natural COVID circumstances has forced everyone to stay indoors, bond with your family and slow down in life, relishing every moment you live.  Obviously, in this span I have learnt new skills like cooking, enjoying my hobby – crafting platters for kids and also Binge-watching various web series and movies.

One of my favourite digital platforms ZEE5 has become my new essential and daily dose of entertainment. I had loved their web series “The Chargesheet – Guilty or not” and had shared my review on the blog..and this time the same platform has surprised me with their distinct, interesting and family-driven content “Chintu ka Birthday“.

For those who had a quarantine birthday this year, how difficult for you it was to not have normal celebrations, meet friends, and cut a cake? Chintu ka birthday talks about how a family who is stuck in Iraq (year 2004) is looking forward to celebrating their younger son’s birthday in difficult circumstances. The film shows how innocence prevails over brutality where the family is seeking happiness in tough times, amidst all the troubles.

STORYLINE

The film shows an entire day of the life of a 6-year-old Chintu and his family. They are all geared up to celebrate Chintu’s 6th birthday in full swing. But wait a minute.. it is not as rosy as it looks !!!

Chintu’s dad “Madan ” had promised his son that unlike last year his birthday won’t get ruined under any circumstances and so he sends her elder daughter “Laxmi” to buy a cake, but comes back home without a cake. To not disappoint his son, the mother-daughter duo planned to bake a cake getting the oven fixed by the father. And if that was not all, a bomb explodes outside the house and things take a turn from there onwards.

American Soldiers enter the house and create havoc in Madan’s life as he is now a suspected terrorist. The insensitive behaviour of the soldiers like tearing of the happy birthday banner in front of Chintu’s eyes affects Chintu the little boy. The house is now filled with tension rather than celebrations.

However, there are key interesting factors that make the storyline appealing and enthralling for the audience

  • STAR CAST

A simple and talented star cast with actors like Vinay Pathak, Seema Bhargava And Tillotama Shome play their characters with honesty making you believe they are the victim of the play. The little boy Chintu played by Vedant Chibber makes an appealing debut and also will make you fall in love with his innocence.

  • CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF IRAQ WITHOUT THE VISUAL APPEAL

The entire shoot takes place in a house, so you only get to feel the situation outside the house and not see it. For example, when the bomb explodes,  you don’t get to see the ruins but only hear the blast. When a helicopter is flying above the house you don’t get to see it, you only hear the sound

  • THE MOVIE GIVES A STRONG MESSAGE OF HOPE

In Spite of the difficult circumstances the family goes through with the day, Chintu’s characters showcase how hopeful he is that these troubled times will go away and he will soon go back to his homeland India.

  • SOME REAL UNTOLD STORIES

The film reveals the plight of illegal immigrants and how American soldiers are stuck in Iraq for years. The little key highlights like this add to the beauty of the film

Overall the “Chintu ka Birthday” is around 1.30 hours long and is based on a unique premise. The movie sends out a positive message on how we can stay together with our family and pass through the tough phases of life. The simple yet unconventional story will surely uplift your mood in our current times and bring a smile on your face.

From thrillers to family drama, from reality to fictional, ZEE5 has been a great platform to enjoy the cinema in true form for sharing content like “Chintu ka Birthday”
